A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
