Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
