No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
