Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Place.

Initially, this album could seem more like an arduous academic challenge rather than the latest popular music project by an artist who just had a last hit featured an international K-pop icon. Broken across 4 different sections and performed in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently via the prism of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists look rather modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, and full credit belonging to the artist. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with the present, its stakes are far greater here, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit shines brightly during the stirring Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song then shifts into the wild single driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album lies in you rarely exactly understand—or even want to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly each song ends in a completely distinct point than where it began. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused work starts out dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is navigating the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little coincidence that it has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed primarily in English swells around a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. This feat is repeated on another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires time to fully explore but never feels like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
