The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of official records related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after months of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.
Swift Passage in Both Chambers
The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
The public have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”
Next Steps
The measure next heads to Trump for his approval. The president stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.
Even though the president has for months rejected the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a public section, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he worried the measure would disclose specific data of individuals involved, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
