The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
